The sound of the clicking of heels echoed off the barren walls of the empty corridor. Emmett Howan sighed at the lack of people in the corridor. The quiet was always her favorite but of late she dreaded it. The silence that shrouded her office and room inflicted her thoughts to jump to those of her missing brother and her family’s business. The fear of leaving Hogwarts the only real home she has ever known, to become the leader of a criminal enterprise kept her awake at night, afraid that if she slept she would be taken without warning. That is how the Howan family worked, pillaging and secrecy. Emmett had tried desperately to rid herself of her family’s values, which was one of the reasons why she traveled around the world right after her Hogwarts days.
She shift the folders and papers she hugged to her chest as the corner of the pile was digging into her. Her stomach rumbled but she had no desired to eat. Her eating habits had also suffered due to her brother’s disappearance. It had been a week since she had last heard from her mother, the only family member she was still in contact with, and that meant things were not looking good for her at all. Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry was supposed to be far enough from her family but it did not appear to be.
Emmett sighed and pushed back her long black curls off her shoulders. Her black robe flew out behind her as she walked purposely towards her classroom. She had decided to skip the Great Hall today, her absence would most certainly be noted again by her colleagues, but alas, she wasn’t feeling up to pretending to being okay. Moving the papers into the crook of her arm, Emmett tugged at her Hufflepuff yellow tie. She glanced down at the first page of the papers she carried. It was a student’s essay about Animagi, and it was quite interesting as Emmett herself was one. The topic of the essay was to describe whether or not they themselves would become an Animagus, and this particular student said they would but the reasons of why were unusual. Not that Emmett’s were. She walked on, her black heels clicking on the stone floor, engrossed in the student's essay.
The cry of a young child caused Emmett to look up just before running straight into a man’s chest. Were those suspenders? Her still free hand grabbed the man to steady her balance. Papers and satchel rained down from the man’s grasp. Emmett fortunately had managed to hold on to hers. She opened her mouth to apologize but noticed that her hand was still clenching his shirt. Her fingers let go of the fabric, dropping next to her side. The man began to scramble to pick up his papers and she just stood there, trying place who he was and why there was a two year helping him. It clicked. It was Professor Creed and his son. She highly doubted he remember who she was as he was dealing with a lot of grief in the past year and she herself did not venture up to the third floor that often. Emmett shook herself out of her daze. It was partially her fault that Professor Creed had ran into her and she figured she had better help the man. “Accio”, she said softly, the fallen papers stacking them self neatly in her outstretched hand.
She smiled at the toddler. He was certainly adorable and looked much like his father. She turned away from the boy and looked up at Creed. “It’s alright, there is no harm done,” she said with a small smile. “I should be the one apologizing. I was trying to read an essay while walking.” Emmett’s brown eyes roamed over Creed, trying to figure out what he was like. He was attractive to her but his eyes still held grief for his deceased wife. She bit her lip. But he was good looking. Her brain was arguing with her, demanding that the thought of them potentially being together not exist. What the hell was wrong with her? He has a child. So, you want one. I barely know him. But you think he is cute. What does a little crush have to do with any of this? A lot. No. Yes. No. Yes. You can like him but you can’t act on it. You will have to leave soon. Emmett angrily tossed away her thoughts and looked away from the professor. Her emotions were all over the place, her lack of sleep factoring in greatly along with the strain of her family. Emmett desperately wanted it all to stop.
